Amanda Edgell

Amanda B. Edgell is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Alabama and a Research Fellow at the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute. Her research broadly focuses on the politics of authoritarianism and regime transformation. Her current projects address the durability of authoritarian regimes, democratic resilience, and democratization. Her most recent books include Democracy in Trouble: Democratic Backsliding and Resilience from 1900 to 2022 (Cambridge Elements, 2024) and Why Democracies Develop and Decline (Cambridge, 2022). In addition, her work has appeared in Comparative Political Studies, the British Journal of Political Science, Democratization, and Political Science Research and Methods, among others. Dr. Edgell received her PhD from the University of Florida and also holds an MA from Texas A&M University and a BS (with honors) from Appalachian State University.
