Join us for an upcoming virtual lecture organized by DEC faculty affiliate, Dr. Guadalupe Martinez Fuentes at the Universidad de Granada!
On November 5 at 4:00 PM CET / 10:00 AM EST, Dr. Katarzyna Dośpiał-Borysiak, Associate Professor at the University of Łódź, will discuss “Poland after Democratic Backsliding: From Erosion to Reconstruction?”
The lecture will examine Poland as a revealing case of democratic backsliding, resilience, and attempted reconstruction. It will trace how democratic erosion unfolded through the weakening of the rule of law, the politicization of public institutions, growing pressure on media pluralism, and conflicts over judicial independence. The second part of the lecture will focus on the political change triggered by the 2023 parliamentary elections, the role of civic mobilization, and the challenges of rebuilding democratic institutions in a deeply polarized society. The final issue will be whether this democratic turn can prove durable in the face of the growing influence of radical conservative forces.
Dr. Dośpiał-Borysiak’s research focuses on sustainable development, climate policy, European integration, and comparative public policy. Since 2023, she has also served as the Country Expert for Poland in the Bertelsmann Foundation’s Sustainable Governance Indicators project.
