Is U.S. Democracy Really at Risk? A Framework for Assessing Threats

Please join us for a virtual event on Tuesday, July 8th at 10:00 AM EST, co-hosted by American University’s Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies (CCPS) and the Trust, Accountability and Inclusion (TAI) Collaborative, as we introduce our new, nonpartisan framework designed to identify and interpret potential threats to U.S. democracy. With partisan divides and a flood of new policies almost daily, it’s hard to tell which actions threaten democratic norms—and which simply reflect political disagreement. Our goal is to move beyond partisan narratives and offer an approach that minimizes researcher bias and supports rigorous analysis.

We will present our new U.S. focused work, as well as draw international comparisons using our Democratic Erosion Event Dataset (DEED) to explore how the U.S. trajectory compares to broader global trends of democratic backsliding.This event is targeted to civil society leaders, journalists, funders, and anyone seeking a clear and evidence-based method for assessing democratic risks in real time.
