August 14th, 12:00 – 1:00 PM CDT
Join the Chicago Center on Democracy (CCD) and the Democratic Erosion Consortium (DEC) for a panel discussion on the urgent challenges facing journalism in Mexico.
This event aims to delve into the alarming rates of journalist threats and assassinations in Mexico. We will explore how journalists navigate the precarious boundaries of what they can and cannot write, the tactics used by federal and local governments to pressure the media, and the strategies journalists must employ to ensure their safety in the face of criminal and political threats.
The panel will feature three panelists, including seasoned journalists and scholars, who will share their experiences and perspectives on the resilience and courage required to practice journalism in one of the world’s most dangerous environments for the press. The panelists include Sandra Ley, the Security Program Coordinator at México Evalua, and renowned Mexican journalists Adelina Dayebi Pazos and Javier Garza Ramos.
During the session, we will address questions such as:
* What are the primary challenges journalists in Mexico face when reporting on sensitive topics?
* How do federal and local governments in Mexico exert pressure on the media, and what tactics are used?
* What strategies can journalists employ to protect themselves from criminal and political threats?
* How can academia support and protect journalists in these challenging environments?
The event will be held over Zoom in English. Event is free and welcome to all.
This event is co-sponsored by the CCD and DEC.
