Cathy Lisa Schneider is Professor at American University School of International Service. She first taught a version of the Democratic Erosion course in spring of 2017, and has taught it since at the graduate and undergraduate level and in the DC jail (correctional facility). She is the author of Police Power and Race Riots: Urban Unrest in Paris and New York (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014, pbk 2017), Shantytown Protest in Pinochet’s Chile (Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1995) — based on years of neighborhood organizing with the underground opposition — and co-editor of Collective Violence, Contentious Politics and Social Change: A Charles Tilly Reader with Ernesto Castaneda (New York: Routledge, 2017). She has published articles on military and police repression, social movements, riots and racial and ethnic discrimination in Latin America, Europe, North Africa and the United States.
